STUART, 1806-1873. Son of James, who educated him on a severe and peculiar system; official of E. India Co., 1823-58; radical M. P. 1865-68; philosopher and political economist, leader of the a ociational school in psychology, and of the utilitarians in ethics, modifying Bentham's differences only of quantity by differences of quality in pleasure. In political economy he sympathized with the social and humanitarian movement, without departing from Ricardo and Malthus.
