LOTHROP, LL.D., D.C.L., 1814-1877. American historian. His Rise of the Dutch Republic, 3 vols., 1856, is a brilliant work of great value and importance. Its subject was continued in History of the United Netherlands, 4 vols., 1860-68, and Life of Barneveld. 1874. He was U. S. Minister to Austria 1861-66, and to England 1869-70. His early novels, Morton's Hope, 1839, and A Merry mount, 1849, won little attention. Correspondence, 1889. Motmot. New World tropical picarian bird, with serrated bill, middle tail feathers much the longest, and vanes denuded from outer half of the shaft, except at the tip. Motmot ( Prionites bras i liens is ).
