Motley, JOHN

LOTHROP, LL.D., D.C.L., 1814-1877. American historian. His Rise of the Dutch Republic, 3 vols., 1856, is a brilliant work of great value and importance. Its subject was continued in History of the United Netherlands, 4 vols., 1860-68, and Life of Barneveld. 1874. He was U. S. Minister to Austria 1861-66, and to England 1869-70. His early novels, Morton's Hope, 1839, and A Merry mount, 1849, won little attention. Correspondence, 1889. Motmot.
