The chief events of his pontificate were: the formation of the League of Cambrai against the Republic of Venice; a subsequent retraction of his policy by allying himself with the Venetians, the Swi , and the Spaniards, by whose united help he succeeded in freeing Italy from the French; and his liberal patronage of the arts, as evinced by his encouragement of Rafaelle and Michael Angelo, and by his being the original founder of the cathedral church of St. Peter in the Holy City.
