(1851), a U.S, Senator; b. in Jefferson, Ohio, Dec. 20, 1851. Graduating from Oberlin College, in 1872, he studied and practiced law, in Cleveland, Ohio, He was elected to the U.S. Congre , serving in the 51st to the 54th and in the 60th Congre es. He was elected to the 61st Congre , but soon after resigned to enter the Senate. At the Republican National Convention of 1916 he had the solid support of the Ohio delegation as nominee for the Presidency. He_ has written Financial Crises and Periods of Industrial and Commercial Depre ion, 1902; and Some Political Tendencies of the Times and the Effect of the War Thereon, 1919.
