Leipzig

or Leipsic, (līpzig,) an important commercial city of Germany, kingdom of Saxony, on the White Elster, 20 m. S.E. of Halle. Besides occupying an eminent position with regard to its manu fs., it is also a grand educational centre, and the great emporium of the book - trade of central Europe. Historically, it is famous as having been the scene of a series of the most sanguinary battles of modern times, fought Oct. 16-19th, 1813, and in which Napoleon I. suffered ade feat which had the effect of freeing Germany from his armies.
