(am’fo-fil, am-fo-fl ἼΚ, am-fof‘il-us) (Gr. both + ριλεῖν to love). ‘Stainable with either acid or basic dyes; also a cell so staining. a.-basophil, staining with both acid and basic stains, but having a greater affinity for basic ones. a.-oxyphil, staining with both acid and basic dyes, but having a greater affinity for the acid ones. amphoric (am-forik) (L. amphoric us, from am’ phora jar). Pertaining to a bottle; resembling the sound made by blowing acro the mouth of a bottle. a mph or i city (am-fo-ris‘it-e). The condition of giving off amphoric sounds on percu ion or auscultation. amphoriloquy (am-for-il’o-kwé) [L. am’phora jar + lo’qui to speak]. The production of amphoric sounds in speaking. amphorophon (am-for-of’on-e) [Gr. ἀμφορεύς jug φωνή Bound). An amphoric sound of the voice. amphoteric, amphoterous (am-fo-ter’ik, am-fot’- er-us) (Gr. ἀμφότερος pertaining to both]. Having opposite characters; affecting both red and blue litmus. amphoterism (am-fo’ter-izm).
