A mineral of which there are several varieties. The precious garnet, is transparent, red, and in crystal » or rounded grains; it is a silicate of alumina and iron, and is used for ornamental jewellery. Common garnet is often found in large crystals and ma es, translucent, and of various colours. [s. 502]
