Limbus, or LIMBO

The practice of adding lime to the soil is not so much to furnish plant food, since nearly all soils contain lime in abundance for the needs of the plant, as to induce chemical changes in the plant food already present, rendering it more available. The practice, if continued, without the addition of other fertilizers, must result in soil exhaustion sooner than if lime had not been applied. Its effects are most marked on soils containing a large amount of vegetable matter, and the lime should be applied as quicklime.
