(spon'sür.) [ L., a surety.] (Law.) One who binds himself as surety for another, and is responsible for his default.-(Theol.) One who acts as godfather or godmother at the baptism of an infant, and engages in his behalf that he shall be brought up in the Christian faith and receive a moral education. [s. 848]
