The surface of the lower peninsula is level or undulating, and in a few places hilly. hilly. The upper is more broken, the hills upon Keeweenaw Point being almost high enough to be considered mountains. In the s. portion of the State is considerable prairie. It is, or was before the cutting of lumber began, well covered with forests. Geologically the lower peninsula is almost entirely covered by the Carboniferous formation, areas of Devonian being found in the n. part and in the s.e. On the upper peninsula, near the shores of Lake Superior, are large areas of the Cam brian formation. The s. shore of this peninsula is floored with Silurian; in its central part, extending s.w. into Wis., is a large area of Archæan formations. Its agricultural interests are very large, consisting mainly in the raising of cereals and fruit. The value of farms, farm implements and machinery in 1890 was about $578,373,270, and of farm products in 1889, $83,651,390. The lumber industry is a very important one, the mining industries even more so. On the lower peninsula coal is found, although as yet the production is light. On the upper peninsula are found the most important iron mines in the U. S. The copper mines of the upper peninsula control the markets of the U. S., and produced in 1895 129,740,765 pounds, 77,439,907 of which was from one mine, the Calumet and Hecla. On the lower peninsula are found salt springs, which produced in 1895, by evaporation, 491,167 tons of salt, two-sevenths of the total product in the U.S. M. has large lake fisheries and a very important commerce upon the lakes.
