Silliman, Benjamin

(1779-1864), ‘‘The Nestor of American Science,”’ profe or in Yale College from 1802 to 1853, founded the “American Journal of Science’ in 1818, and was sole editor until 1838. He exerted his influence for the Union and the abolition of slavery.
