Alizarine

(a-liz a-rin.) (Chem.) The coloring matter of Madder. It is a brilliant scarlet substance, which crystallizes in prisms and di olves in spirituous solutions. Turkey red, madder pink, and all the finer madder colors are compounds of A. and fatty acids with bases. Graobe and Liebermann have discovered the method of preparing A. artificially. Form.
