(LLEWELYN) WARK, (1880), a moving picture direc: tor, 6, in La Grange, Ky, He was educated in the public schools and for several oe was on the stage as an actor, @ first took part in moving ashe! in 1908 as an actor and then ecame a director. He was among the first of the moving picture directors to show appreciation of the po ibilities of the screen and his productions were of unusual excellence, They include, Birth of a Nation, Broken Blo oms, and rphans of the Storm. During the World War he was chairman of the War Cooperative Commi ion, GRIFFITH, SIR. RICHARD JOHN out (1784-1878), Irish geologist; carried boundary survey of relaas completed, 1844, GRIGGS, EDWARD HOWARD! (1868), educator and lecturer; 6. Owae tonna, Minn. He graduated from Indiana University, where he also taught Eng. literature; 1889-91. Aftere wards he became profe or of that department, serving for two years, meantime giving instruction in ethics at Leland Stanford. He was _ profe or of ethics at the latter university from 1893 to 1897, later heading the department of education as well, In 1899 he became known as a university lecturer, giving extension courses throughout the United States and Canada, and also as a writer. He lectured on Dante, ferent autobiographies, Italian cities, human progre , Maeterlinck, moral leaders, Plato’s philosophy and Browning, his lectures on these and other ‘subjects being afterwards published in a series of handbooks, He also edited Art of Life series. His more lengthy ‘works include Moral Hducation, The New Humanism, Philosophy of Ari, and The Soul of Democracy.
