DAVID FRIED RICH, (strow ,) a German rationalistic theologian, B. at Ludwigsburg, Würtemberg, 1808, became profe or of theology at Zurich in 1839, a position he was obliged to resign on account of the popular feeling excited against him by the publication two years before of his Life of Jesus Critically Treated, awork in which he e ays to prove that the entire New Testament is but a collection of fables. S., who has been accounted the author of the so-called mythical theory of biblical interpretation, has since produced The Christian Dogma considered in its Historical Development and its Conflict with Modern Science (1840-1),und aNew Life of Jesus (1864).
