Ox. 1860; commenced horse racing 1862; purchased horses at unheard of prices and backed them for large amounts; trained his horses with John Day at Danebury; lost a fabulous sum on Kangaroo which he purchased in 1865 for £12,000 highest price ever paid for a racehorse; lost heavily on Lady Elizabeth in the Derby 1868; struck out the Earl from racing for the St. Leger 1868; lived most extravagantly and gambled; master of the Quorn hounds 1866; won the Cambridge shire with Ackworth 1864, the 1000 guineas with Repulse 1866; lost £103,000 when Hermit won the Derby 1867. d.
