BOATSWAIN

The second of the three warrant officers of a man of war; he has charge of the boats, rigging, anchors, and cables. It his duty to turn the hands up, or summon the whole crew, whenever they are required for any duty. He should from the nature of his duties be an active man, and a thorough seaman. The boatswain's mates a ist the boatswain, summon the watches or other portions of the crew to duty, and inflict punishments. [s. 164]
