ASHER BROWN, (doo-rand',) an American painter and engraver, B. in New Jersey, 1796, acquired ahigh reputation by his numerous landscapes, and, upon the resignation of Prof. Morse, became president of the National Academy of Design. He engraved Trumbull's Declaration of Independence. Among his paintings are The Capture of Major André, Primeval Forest, and Franc on i a Mountains. [s. 308]
