Lithuania

(lith-u-a'ne-ah,) the former name of a country of Europe, united to Poland in 1569, and now forming part of the Ru ian dominions. The principal rivers are the Dnieper, Dwina, Niemen, Pripet, and Beres in a. It is a flat region, fertile in corn, and produces honey, wood, pitch, and great quantities of wool; also, excellent little horses, which are never shod, their hoofs being very hard. There are vast forests, in which are bears, wolves, elks, wild oxen, lynxes, beavers, wild cats, ., and eagles and vultures are common. L. is now comprised in the Ru ian govts. of Grodno, Minsk, and Wilna. [s. 549]
