[Lat., from Gr. lam pour is a glowworm; lampõ =to shine, and our a = a tail.] Entom.: The typical genus of the sub-family Lampyrine and of the family Lampyride. Lam pyris noctiluca is the Glowworm (q. v.). la-na, s . [The native name.] A kind of close grained, tough wood, obtained from the Genipa american a , a tree of the Cinchona family, and a native of British Guiana. The fruit, called genipap, yields a pigment called lana dye, used by the natives to stain their skins.
