Any orthopterous insect of the family Phasmidæ: particularly applied to Diapheromera femorata, the commonest insect of this kind in the United States, where it is also called woodhorse, stick-insect, twig bug, twig-insect, walking twig, walking- stick, prai walking - stick rie-alligator, specter, and devil's horse.
