NICOMEDIA

[s. 556] : A town and seaport in Asiatic S. E. from Constantinople, at the head of the gulf of the same name. It was the ancient capital of Bithynia, being built by Nicomedes I. in 264 B.C., and during the Roman Empire it was frequently used as an imperial residence. Under Turkish rule it decreased very much in importance, but has grown again since the extension of the railway from Constantinople to the interior of Asia Minor. It has a Turkish navy yard. the Population about 15,000. Station of (1847), but now (1903) an outstation with 6 native workers, 2 places of worship, 4 Sunday schools, 2 day schools, and 258 profe ed Christians. The Turkish name of the place is Turkey, situated 53 miles E. ABCFM Ismid. 556
