(Lat. upupa, a hoopoe.) A genus of Tenuirostral Pa erine birds, distinguished by an ornamental head-crest formed of a double range of feathers, which can be erected at will. The common hoopoe (Upupa epops) is an occasional but rare visitant of England. [s. 1289]
