CESNOLA, LUIGI PALMA DI

(18321904), soldier and archeologist; b. Piedmont, Italy. He was educated at the Italian Royal Military Academy and served in the war of 1849 and later in the Crimea. Coming to the United States a year before the outbreak of the Civil War, he served on the Union side, becoming brigadier general. While serving as U.S. Consul at Cyprus, 186577, he made important archeological discoveries. He was a director and trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for 26 years. Besides many brochures on archeological subjects he wrote Cyprus: Its Cities, Tombs and Temples.
