Titanium

(ti-ta'ne-um.) (Chem.) A metallic element discovered by Gregor in 1798; it is scarcely known in the metallic state; at. weight 50; symbol Ti. Small cubical crystals of a copper color and perfect metallic lustre are frequently found in the slag of blast furnaces, consisting of mixed nitride and cyanide of titanium. A compound of titanic acid with iron is frequently met with in nature, mixed with magnetic oxide of iron, ., under the name of titaniferous iron sand; and is now used in iron-smelting. [s. 898]
