That form of pulmonary e. in which, from the rupture of one or more air-vesicles, air is forced into the connective ti ue between the lobules, generally near the apex of the lung, and forms pouches of various sizes. [Koranyi (A, 319).] Surgical e., Traumatic e. Subcutaneous e. due to traumatism. Vesicular e. Fr., emphyseme vesicula ire. Ger., Vesicularemphysem. Of Laennec, that form of pulmonary e. which consists in abnormal dilatation of the air-vesicles and consequent over-accumulation of air. It may come on gradually or suddenly (as from playing upon a wind instrument). As the air-vesicles coalesce, the interstitial ti ue and its blood-ve els are effaced and the nutrition of the lung is consequently impoverished. Dyspnoea is a marked symptom of the disease, and there is a tendency to ultimate dilatation of the right side of the heart and dropsical effusions. [D, 1.] Vicarious e. See Compensatory e. [s. 691]
