a cosmopolitan genus of plants in the order Aquifoliaceze, which consists of between one and two hundred species. f. a qui folium, the common holly, is found chiefly in Central Europe; it is valued as an ornamental tree and for its fine-grained, heavy, compact timber; the berries are poisonous and have violent emetic effects, JI.
