Seraph

(ser df.) [From Heb. saraph,to become elevated or purified.] (Script.) A spirit of the highest rank in the angelic hierarchy:-so named from their being supposed to be most inflamed with divine love, or holy zeal, owing to their more immediate attendance at the throne of God. They are almost invariably spoken of in connection with the cherubim, whom they are on a par with in respect of rank and attributes. [s. 815]
