allonge (alunj)

[F. allonge, OF. alonge, lengthening, extension, a sword or rapier; a lunge. 24. A long rein, when a horse is trotted in the hand. Bailey. -3. (Pron. as F., a-lônzh'.) A slip of paper attached to a bill of exchange or other negotiable note, to receive indorsements when the back of the bill will hold no more; a rider. In Great Britain, where bills of exchange must be written on stamped paper, the allonge is considered part of the document, and does not require to be stamped. - Allonge wig, a name given to the large and flowing periwig of the time of Louis XIV.
