He graduated at West Point in 1842; served as a lieutenant in the Mexican war; and was appointed brigadier-general of United States volun teers at the beginning of the Civil War. He defeated General Sterling Price on the Blackwater in 1881, and in the following year commanded the land force in the expedition which reduced New Madrid and Island No. 10. He was commi ioned major-general of volunteers for his service at New Madrid, and in June, 1862, was a igned to the com. mand of the Army of Virginia. A division of his army under Nathaniel P. Banks was defeated by "Stonewall" Jackson at Cedar Mountain; and he was himself defeated by Robert E. Lee at the second battle of Bull Run, and was forced to retire behind the fortifications of Washington early in Sept. He became major-general in the regular army in 1882, and was retired in 1886.
