Electrotonus

(e-lek-trof -o-nus). The change of condition in a nerve during the application of a current of electricity. A decrease in the electro-motive force of a nerve, effected by sending a current through the nerve in the opposite direction to the nerve-current, is termed the negative phase of electrotonus, while an increase in the electromotive force of a nerve, effected by sending a current through a nerve in the same direction as the nerve current, is termed the positive phase of electrotonus.
