GREAT BASIN

(c, 32° to 45° N.; 112° to 122° W.), area in W. Cordilleran region of U.S.; c. 200,000 sq. miles in extent; surface is varied, and includes mountain chain known as Basin Range, which has smooth valleys with shallow salt lakes; the largest is Great Salt Lake.
