Greeley, HORACE

1811-1872. Editor New York Tribune from 1841; Presidential candidate 1872. His zeal and energy won the greatest influence in public affairs ever exerted by an American journalist, though his course was at times erratic. Some of his sayings are famous, as "Go West, young man," and "Erring sisters, go in peace" (1861). Among his books are The American Conflict, 1864-66; Recollections of a Busy Life, 1868; and What I Know of Farming, 1871.
