Greenbacks

Bank-notes i ued by U. S. Government 1862 and after, backs printed in green: $450,000,000 were authorized 1862-3; gold rose to 285 in 1864, and was at a premium till Dec. 17, 1878. The Greenback party nominated Peter Cooper for Pres. 1876, and cast 81,737 votes for him. In the next two campaigns they showed more strength.
