(tri-pan-o-so'mah) [G. irypanon, an auger, soma, body.) genus of flagellate Protozoa, the members of which have a spindle shaped body with an undulating membrane on one side and a single flagellum. The trypanosomes are parasitic in the blood plasma of a vertebrate (only a few being pathogenic) and as a rule have an intermediate host, an invertebrate animal, in which the sexual cycle occurs. The pathogenic forms cause sleeping sickne in man and a number of diseases in animals. T. bru'cei, the parasite of nagana or tsetse fly disease.
