Antibacchius

[Lat., from Gr. antibakcheios.) (Pros.) A poetical foot of three syllables, the first two long, and the last one short; -the reverse of the bacchius. Antibes, (an-tecb',) a fortified seaport town of France, dep. of the Var, on the Mediterranean, with a commodious harbor, 10 m. S. of Gra e. It was founded by the Ma ilians 340 B. c., and named Anti polis. It is an important barrier on the side of Italy, and was, in 1747, besieged without effect by the Austrians and English. Pop. 6,829.
