LIST

The enclosed field or ground wherein the ancient knights held their jousts and tournaments; so called from its being encircled with pales, barriers, or CIVIL. Bt.ikes, as with a list. Some of these were double, one for each cavalier, which kept them apart, and prevented them from coming nearer each other than a spear's length. Hence the expre ion to enter the lists is synonymous with engaging in contest. List. The name given to the border or selvage of a piece of cloth, . List, or Listel.
