State of Central America, s. of Nicaragua, extending from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific. Area ab. 23.000 sq. m. It has large mineral resources, as yet little developed, though gold was discovered 1823. Under Spanish rule it was attached to Guatemala. It formed a part of the Central American Federation 1824-48, and has since been independent; capital San José. Pop. 1892, 266,161.
