Freckle

(frèk'l.) [From Ger.flecken, a blotch.] (Med.) This term includes not only the yellow lentigines, which appear on persons of a fair skin, and the large brown patches, which also arise from exposure to the direct rays of the sun, but also to those large dusky patches which are very similar in appearance, but which appear on other parts of the surface that are constantly covered. They do not extend farther than the skin. Many cosmetics have been recommended for their removal. Simple spirituous lotions of weak mineral acids, applied a few times in the day, are as effectual as any other means. [s. 384]
