It is very extensive, and is found in a great variety of situations, and at every season of the year. Lecidea geographic a is sometimes sulphur-yellow and sometimes yellowish-green. If a yellow specimen be suspended over a solution of carbonate of ammonia, it becomes covered with carmine-red globules, gradually loses its usnic acid, and then becomes grayish-white.
