ALCYONEUM

(Lat.),n.n. A2la3! (ku®)-o-ne(na)’u3m(utm), Really an adjective agreeing with medic a men. From dAxvévecov, éveov, bastard sponge. Also written alcionium and halcionium, A sort of sponge believed by the ancients to be the nest of a sea-bird or to resemble a sea-bird’s nest, made out of the inspi ated foam of the sea. According to Pliny, it was used to remove spots from the face, and Celsus gives it a place in his list of astringents (* rodent i a”), [B, 45, 111, 113, 114.]—A. for amino sum, A. molle, A. supposum, A. tuberosum, A. vermiculatum. described by Dioscorides and others.
