Chinese card game, recently introduced into England; played in China with cards bearing money suit marks from which W. H. Wilkinson claims European cards were derived. Though the games are the same, there is no The Kansas Whirlwinds. of the product, 1889, $95,070,080. The mineral resources consist chiefly of coal, of which, in 1893, 2,590,700 tons were mined. It has a large and increasing railroad system. There were, in 1893, 8,900 m. in operation. The capital is Topeka. K. came into po e ion of the U.S. as a part of the Louisiana purchase. It was organized as a territory and opened for settlement in 1854, and has acquired a special interest in the history of the nation on account of its relation to the slavery question. The defenders and opposers of slavery made it the battleground of their opinions, each striving for the control of the State. Societies representing both parties were organized, and rival Legislatures contested the supremacy with each other. The Constitution of 1855 prohibited slavery; that of 1857 sanctioned it: that of 1859 again prohibited it. It was finally admitted into the Union, 1861, and took an active part in the suppre ion of the Rebellion. Pop., 1890, 1,427,096; density, 17 per sq. m. (See Map, p. 424.)
