A district, sometimes in the Old Testament called Ashur, in the upper part of Me so pot am i a, along the shores of the Tigris. The chief city was Nineveh. The word is also used in a wider sense, as applied to the whole A yrian Empire. Strabo extends bounds as far as Cilicia, Phoenicia, and Judea. In P. R. 3. 270-4 Milton gives the bounds of the Empire. He sometimes its uses the word in the sense of Phoenician: in Comus 1002 he has reference to the story of Thammuz, in Mansus he alludes to // Adone of Marino, and in Idea Platon. 29 he probably indicates San chon i a thon. A precedent for this usage is found in Virgil, Georg. 2. 465. 50
