(hel.) [A.S.; Heb. Sheol; Gr. Hades. ] (Theol.) The place, or condition after death, of the souls of those who, having failed during life to fulfil the e ential obligations imposed by the natural or the positive divine law, are consigned to a state of punishment or purgation. [s. 447]
