Originally, period of the moon's synodical revolution, or time from one new moon to the next; viz., 29d., 12 h., 44m., 2.684s., or approximately 294 days. In the Julian and Greg or i an calendars all attempt to adjust the divisions of time to the moon's motion was abandoned, and an arbitrary value of the month adopted.
