Satire

(satire or sat'ŭr.) [Fr.; L. sat ira.] (Lit.) A species of writing, the object of which is always castigation. It presupposes not merely much natural wit, but also acute observation, and familiarity with varied life and manners to call this wit into exercise. [s. 798]
