—An instrument for measuring minute distances and angles, consisting usually of a gla slip ruled with fine lines and controlled by an accurate screw of fine pitch. For instance, one twentieth of sa revolution; of 5a screw of 50 threads to the inch, gives 45; or advances the point 1000 inch.
