[In Fr. absces ; Sp. absce o ; Ital. abse o ; Lat. pl. abscedentia (absce es): fr. Lat. absce us = (1) a going away, (2) an absce : abscedo = to go away; abs from, or away; cedo to go.] Med.: A gathering of pus in any ti ue or organ of the body. It is so called because there is an absce us (= a going away or departure) of portions of the animal ti ue from each other to make room for the suppurated matter lodged between them. It results from the softening of the natural ti ues, and the exudations thus produced. Absce es may occur in almost any portion of the body. They are of three types: the acute absce , or phlegmon, arising from an inflammatory tendency in the part; the chronic absce , connected with scrofulous or other weakne in the constitution; and the diffused absce , due to contamination in the blood.
