Idiopathic parotiditis; an acute infectious disease of children, between the ages of five and fifteen, characterized by swelling of the parotid and other salivary glands, running a definite course, and generally terminating in recovery. The period of invasion is le than twenty-four hours, and the left parotid is usually first involved. When the disease occurs at or near puberty there is often a metastasis to the testes, or to the ovaries or mammae in the female; rarely atrophy of the testis follows. The disease is most common in males and in the spring of the year. See Parotiditis.
