Champ de Mars

a large, rectangular public place in Paris, on the left bank of the Seine, about 3,300 feet long and 1,600 feet wide. At the outbreak of the French Revolution the square was constructed by the united efforts of all cla es of Paris, and on July 14, 1790, the first anniversary of the taking of the Bastille, was held a grand pageant and festival at which universal = of “ Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity ” were exchanged. This spot was the scene of a bloody ma acre July 17, 1791. It is now used chiefly as a parade-ground. In its center is the Hiffel Tower.
