[Pref. peri-, and Gr. gyne a woman.] Bot.: The name given by Nees von Esenbeck to the hypogynous sete at the base of the ovary in Cyperacese; the membranous covering of the pistil in these plants. pě-rig-yn-oŭs, adj . [Mod. Latin perigyn ( ia ); Eng. suff.- ous .] Bot.: Growing upon some body that surrounds the ovary; spec if. 1. ( Of stamens): Inserted into the calyx or corolla, especially the former, those on the corolla being generally called epipetalous. 2. ( Of a disc ): Having contracted an adhesion to the sides of the calyx, as in Amygdal us. perigynous-exogens, s. pl. Bot.: A sub-cla of Exogens, containing those with perigynous stamens, growing to the side of either the calyx or the corolla; ovary superior, or nearly so. Lindley divides it into ten alliances: Fico i dales, Daphnales, Rosales, Sax if raga les, Rhamnales, Gentian a les, Solan a les, Cortusales, Echiales, and Bignonia les. për-i-he-li-on, për-I-he-11-ŭm, subst .
